Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi: The Finale Wraps Up All Loose Ends, But Fails To Hit The Mark

After 65 episodes, “Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi” finally came to a close last week. Starring Mikaal Zulfiqar, Mashal Khan, Anmol Baloch, Sajida Syed, Aly Khan and others, the story has been written by Ali Moeen and Rehana Aftab and directed by Syed Ramish Rizvi. While “Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi” may have been an entertaining watch, it certainly did not need 65 episodes to tell this story and the show was riddled with side stories that didn’t really have any effect whatsoever.

In the finale, Sehar (Anmol Baloch) is seen suffering in jail, riddled with guilt over her actions. Saim (Mikaal Zulfiqar) pays her visit and proceeds to blame her for everything that has gone wrong in his life. He makes it clear that everything is “her fault.” This is rich, because Saim was a married man who had an affair with his young house help. Saim mistreated Meera (Mashal Khan) emotionally, mentally and physically, even attempting to strangle her. He turned a blind eye to all of Sehar’s faults and decided that Meera, the woman he had been married to for over 10 years, was a liar and characterless – and for what reason? Saim is the real villain in this story and yet, he continues to blame Sehar. Sehar cannot cope with what her life has turned to and commits suicide. While Sehar was a terrible individual, she was young and impressionable, and it would’ve been better to see her living her life behind bars rather than seeing yet another suicide death.

There were several side stories on this show and most of them weren’t necessary – specifically the storyline with Saim’s sister (played by Ayesha Toor), her husband and their kids. What was the purpose of this story? It didn’t really have any significance. It was nice to see Samina and her husband have a happy ending in the end, content with each other as Imran finds his way towards recovery with Meera’s help. Can someone please give Aly Khan some roles of substance? It’s always wonderful to see him, but his roles always remind the viewer that he deserves so much better.

Of course, we can’t end this review without discussing Meera and Saim’s marriage. Meera rightly decides to get divorced from Saim, which is great to see. Meera is an independent woman with an education and with how abusive Saim became, he did not deserve forgiveness. That being said, Saim was a negligent father, but certainly not a bad one – and still cared for his son in the end. It was terrible then to see how Meera encouraged her son’s choice to stay away from his father. The reason the son gave was because Meera fell into depression whenever she saw Saim. While this may be sweet in theory to see how much this son cares for his mother, it’s a sign of seriously toxic parenting for Meera to encourage this decision and to allow her son to be affected by her emotions. This final scene left a bitter taste in the mouth. Divorce should not equate with families breaking apart and in this day and age, one expects a more intelligent, better thought out wrap up.

Wrapping up, this cast is a talented one and the storyline was even an interesting one. However, the overall treatment was simply too extreme once Sehar murdered Saim’s mother. The story of an opportunistic young girl slowly morphed into something very different. Overall, “Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi” was an entertaining show, but failed to leave a real impact.
