Madame Tussauds removes One Direction wax statues in London

After a long run of seven years, famed wax museum in London, Madame Tussauds has made the decision to remove popular boy band, One Direction from their waxworks display. The boy band created a buzz and grabbed media attention when they split in 2016. And now, the museum has moved their waxworks off the floor of the tourist attraction.

Despite the band splitting and the boys all having successful solo careers, the museum has no plans for the singers to be displayed alone. Harry Styles, 26, Liam Payne, 27, Niall Horan, 26, Louis Tomlinson, 28, and Zayn Malik, 27, formed One Direction in 2010 on the X Factor when Simon Cowell put them together.

Each of the band members had auditioned for the show separately but did not manage to make it to the judge’s stage as solo acts. Simon’s decision however, to put them together, proved to be a success because the band went on to sell over 70 million records and had a successful run. Their waxworks were unveiled by the museum in 2013.

The museum made the decision to remove the statues after the band’s 10th anniversary this summer. Updates are regularly made at the museum as it ‘reacts to the celebrity landscape’, it said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Liam Payne gave fans hope when he said that a One Direction reunion seemed likely for their 10th anniversary. The 26-year-old, while speaking with People magazine in a video chat said that he and his former bandmates are “in the middle of (figuring out) what to do” to mark their anniversary. “Obviously, we know it’s a very big anniversary and we definitely want to do something,” the Strip That Down singer said.

He went on to add, “I mean, it’s a tough one. I can’t promise any reunion plans because that just isn’t it right now.” He further added, “I always put it down to music language because everyone’s releasing at the moment with like two years worth of promo. But, you know, it still seems very hopeful in that department. I’m starting to think it’s gonna happen at some point. So it’s exciting.”

The boys have been focusing on their solo projects over the last four years, since going on a hiatus in March 2016.
