Mads Mikkelson Replaces Johnny Depp In Fantastic Beasts 3: Twitter Is Divided

hey say one should always trust their gut and this is exactly how Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp’s fans are feeling today. A few weeks ago, news about the alleged casting of Mads Mikkelson in the third installment of the David Yates-directed series Fantastic Beasts spread like wildfire on the internet. Various media outlets reported that the Hannibal star was in talks to replace Depp as the villainous character Gellert Grindelwald. The latter’s fans breathed a sigh of relief when Mikkelson responded to the reports of his potential entry in his interview with IGN, stating, “Oh, that is on the rumour basis as we speak. So, I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So, I’m waiting for that phone call.” But now Warner Bros Pictures has confirmed that Mikkelson will be starring in Fantastic Beasts 3.

The studio company has revealed that the James Bond star will take over the role of the dark wizard in the fantasy franchise. According to Deadline, “Warner Bros on Wednesday confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen has been cast as Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3. He had been the top choice to replace Johnny Depp, who had played the role in the first two installments but exited after losing a major libel suit in the UK.” Twitter users have weighed in on the latest development.

Some are cheering for Mikkelson:

“As much as I love Johnny, I’ve said from the beginning before FB was announced that Mads Mikkelsen should have played Grindelwald since he shares the same resemblance as the character and is perfect for the role,” wrote a user. Another added, “Agree, but if anyone could, it’d be Mads Mikkelsen. I don’t want to hear A SINGLE LICK OF HATE for Mads because he was brought on to replace an established character. Stow your bias at the door and let his talent speak for itself.” A post read, “Welcome to Wizard Word, Mads. We love you.” Singing praises for Mikkelson, a fan wrote, “Mads Mikkelsen was criminally underused in the Bond series and is a gem in Hannibal. He’s going to be an incredible Grindelwald.”

Others can only see Depp in the role forever:

“#MadsMikkelsen lost my respect, He let WB fool him, it’s like a career suicide. #JohnnyDepp #JohnnyDeppIsMyGrindelwald,” read a tweet in support of the Pirates of the Caribbean star. “I’m not Anti-Mads at all, I loved him in Hannibal and Death Stranding. I’m anti Warner Bros, anti-Fantastic Beasts, and anti-backstabbing a friend for your own benefit,” noted another user, while another responded to the post with, “I didn’t do it but I think it’s because you’re so anti Mads who’s done nothing wrong! It’s not his fault FB & WB are a-holes! If you’re going to criticise anyone criticise the remaining cast who’ve not spoken out in support of Johnny.” A user penned, “I love Mads Mikkelsen. I do not love the most recent career move he made. There’s *no way* that he’s so hard up for work that it makes sense for him to join a consistently awful franchise run by the figurehead of an international hate movement.” Defending Depp, a post read, “This is so problematic! I love and respect #MadsMikkelsen but this is NOT fair to #JohnnyDepp I’m sorry but I cannot support this. #NotMyGrindelwald#JusticeForJohnnyDepp get it together #WarnerBros !! This beloved franchise will sink!!”

Some remained neutral and frankly don’t care anymore:

“Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald, great choice but I still can’t tolerate how they’re treating Depp, an innocent man!!” Another user weighed in, “I honestly feel so bad for Mads Mikkelsen, such a good actor always getting cast in shitty films and now he finally got a huge film but at what cost? Just hope the Johnny Depp stans don’t make him a target.” A user added, “1. Mads Mikkelsen is an infinitely better casting than Johhn Depp (for any film) 2. Neither Johnny Depp nor Amber Heard can be defended or vilified for the behaviour together 3. Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts are both tarnished by JK Rowling’s attitudes towards trans people.”
