To celebrate the International Day of the Girl, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended a virtual video chat with Nobel prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. The three renowned personalities weighed in on subjects ranging from the barriers that hinder 130 million girls from attending school and the importance of education. “When young girls have access to education everyone wins and everyone succeeds. It just opens the door for societal success at the highest level,” Meghan started off the live video chat, adding how the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the lack of access to education. “It’s not just robbing society of the cultural richness that comes with educating young girls. It’s also robbing these young girls of childhood,” added the duchess.
Meghan added that it is very important for young girls to attain education in order to be able to foster change. “What I had realised very early on was that when women have a seat at the table, conversations in terms of policy change, conversations in terms of legislation and the dynamics of the community are all shifted. And when you have to see how you get a woman to embrace her voice, you have to start with where she is a young girl.”

Meghan continued, “So much is at stake when we don’t give a young woman the opportunity to learn and to get an education.” Harry also spoke to the impact education can have on climate change. “The importance of girls’ education to help defer climate change is absolutely critical,” he said. “Education can open economic doors which makes you less susceptible to disaster.” Meanwhile, Malala stressed on a woman’s right to education as a young girl, sharing her personal experience of being attacked while on her way to school when she was just 15. The 23-year-old Pakistani activist remains adamant in her fight for female education.
