For the upcoming International Day of the Girl 2020, Prince Harry together with Meghan Markle will be teaming up with none other than Malala Yousafzai. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be speaking with the activist via a live video chat on October 11 as they discuss important and relevant issues pertaining to women’s education.
The conversation will engage in and focus on the importance of women’s education and The Malala Fund made the announcement on its social media channels. On its official Instagram page, Malala Fund shared an illustration of a young girl reading a book with the words Day of the Girl adorned boldly at the top and mentioning the date. “We have something exciting coming up… 👀 Curious? Save the date: #DayoftheGirl, October 11” the caption read.
As part of the announcement, they mentioned all the topics that would be covered during the live virtual talk. “They’ll discuss the barriers preventing 130 million girls from going to school and why it’s essential that we champion every girl’s right to learn,” the announcement read. We have no doubts that this will indeed be an insightful conversation as all three of them share a passion for women’s rights and girls’ education. In fact, Malala, 23, has been advocating for women and girls’ education since she was 11 years old.
Meghan Markle too has been working towards the rights of girls and women since she was young. When she married into the royal family, she took patronages related to women’s rights and education, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, which represents higher education across all 53 Commonwealth countries, and Smart Works. The latter is a London-based nonprofit that supports unemployed women and helps them succeed in the job market.
In August this year, Markle, 39, helped close a virtual summit from The 19th on gender and politics. Earlier this year, she also gave a moving speech about social change and the rights of women and girls at the virtual Girl Up Leadership Summit. Prince Harry and Malala had also participated in 2014’s We Day in London and in 2019 both Harry and Meghan were involved with the event.
The much-awaited conversation with Malala, Harry and Meghan will be available for everyone to watch on the Malala Fund YouTube channel on Sunday October 11.
