Meherposh Episode 23: Mehru Steps Aside For Shahjahan and Aayat to Marry

There comes a point when the track on a show becomes intolerable. “Meherposh” has hit that point. Starring Ayeza Khan, Danish Taimoor, Sania Saeed, Ali Abbas, Iffat Rahim and others in prominent roles, “Meherposh” tells the tale of Mehru, a girl who is divorced on her wedding night in the heat of the moment due to a misunderstanding and follows her life post-divorce. Unfortunately, the show has lost its way in recent weeks, building up to a story we’ve grown too accustomed to seeing on our screens – two women fighting over one man.

Aayat (Zainab Shabir) is now behaving as though she made a “mistake” by saying horrible things to her sister, calling her “manhoos,” taunting her over her divorce and so forth. By the way, Aayat is still saying these things to Shahjahan’s mother, Kaneez (Humaira Bano), making this a “rab ne bana di jodi” sort of relationship, two scheming, inherently rotten women planning for their own happiness while dancing on the misery of others. The irony is when Kaneez tells Aayat she chose her for Shahjahan because of her “masoomiyat” (innocence). What innocence? There is no innocence here, this is a girl who will attempt suicide in order to get her way. This is ridiculous, because Aayat and Mehru fought over Mehru and Shahjahan’s relationship, so why is she acting so naïve and innocent now? Next week, we will see her acting blind to Mehru and Shahjahan’s relationship as her mother questions her on the importance of the truth. Please, give us a break, spare us the illogical characters and unnecessary sister-against-sister track. As viewers, we do not enjoy watching this type of story when we were promised a sensitive story about a divorcee and her life after divorce.

Mehru (Ayeza Khan) has turned into the sacrificial lamb, sacrificing her love for Shahjahan (Danish Taimoor) and her happiness for Aayat. What pain and grief has Aayat experienced in life that she needs to be spoonfed happiness like this? Why doesn’t Aayat recognize the grief her sister has been through and understand that she deserves some happiness in her life? What is this concept of love where a woman can ask a man to marry her sister because…..well, he loves her and will do anything in his love for her? What Ekta Kapoor type of rationale is this? No logical individual will marry the sister of the woman he loves, because he will then see his love for the rest of his life – that’s just inviting trouble. Do writers think these angles through? If Aayat has such a problem with Shahjahan marrying Mehru, he should simply walk away and not marry either sister. Quite honestly, there’s an easy fix to this entire situation and that’s for Shahjahan to inform his mother of his blooper which caused Mehru’s divorce. Shahjahan, in his innocence, is responsible for Mehru’s misery and it is his responsibility to fix it – not to marry her sister, a girl he doesn’t have any interest in. Aayat is the very definition of a “kabaab mein haddi.”

Of course, Nusrat (Sania Saeed) is not an intelligent decision maker here either. As a mother, she should have the sense to curb a situation that will negatively impact her daughters and their relationship. Instead, she’s allowing Mehru to sacrifice her happiness, losing a relationship yet again, and allowing Aayat to get her way by using unhealthy tactics of manipulation and conspiracy. At this point, Nusrat should have thrown Kaneez out of the house and turned down the proposal, but instead, she is rubbing salt on Mehru’s wounds. To make things worse, she has now decided the logical solution is to get Mehru married before Aayat to some third individual.

What kind of parenting is this? What kind of writing is this? Why do shows hire such great actors, create such lovable characters and then, for whatever reason, completely blow their own show to pieces by including nonsensical tracks and dragging the show? “Meherposh” is now on episode 23 and this sister vs. sister drama continues, completely taking away from the original story – a story which focused on a divorce and the misunderstanding that caused that divorce. Ali Abbas, Iffat Rahim and Ismat Zaidi are all missing in action on a show in which they are key players. Why? Sania Saeed is wasted, Ayeza Khan and Danish Taimoor are stuck performing in a cliched story and the point of the story has gotten lost in the unnecessary love triangle drama. “Meherposh” has completely derailed and lost the plot.
