There comes a point where a show becomes unbearable and “Meherposh” has long since gone beyond that point. The show, written by Misbah Nausheen and directed by Mazhar Mohsin, was set to be a sure-fire hit with Danish Taimoor and Ayeza Khan starring together after years, accompanied by stellar actors like Rehan Sheikh, Sania Saeed and Ali Abbas. Unfortunately, it’s the writing and the character sketches that have taken a turn for the ultimate worst at this point. It’s difficult to respect any character or even root for a character because their behavior is just not logical.
In episode 26, the scenario is fairly “simple” and repetitive. Aayat (Zainab Shabbir) has become completely delusional in her “love” for Shahjahan (Danish Taimoor) and has developed complete amnesia regarding Mehru (Ayeza Khan) and Nusrat’s (Sania Saeed) previous conversation discussing Shahjahan and Mehru’s feelings for each other. She has forgotten that she tried to commit suicide over their words and is now happily planning for her wedding to Shahjahan. While Mehru sits in mourning over her marriage breaking up on the wedding day (again), Aayat cheerfully enters the room and declares happily that she is marrying Shahjahan as Mehru quietly listens and sacrifices her life and love. It’s not a cute look for Aayat to be this callous and Mehru does not come across as lovable playing the sacrificial lamb for no good reason.
Shahjahan goes through with the marriage but refuses to accept Aayat as his wife. In fact, he calls out both Aayat and Kaneez (Humaira Bano) on the wedding night for their manipulations and snide words for Mehru. He also makes it clear to Aayat that he does not care to see her dressed up or attempt to speak to him. Shahjahan’s emotions come from a place of love for Mehru, but seeing him behave like this takes the viewer back to a particular scene from the beginning of the show – Mehru’s wedding night with Naeem (Ali Abbas). While one does not sympathize with Aayat at all, Shahjahan should have simply refused to marry her rather than mistreat her now after the wedding. Post-marriage, he leaves for work and snubs his new wife.
The most disappointing part of the show is Mehru’s behavior through all this. Mehru is a woman who was divorced due to no fault of her own. She has suffered at the hands of gossiping neighbors and society around her. She has even fallen victim to her own sister’s harsh words. Mehru deserves a break – but Mehru’s great villain is……no, it’s not Aayat, it’s Mehru herself. When Shahjahan has confessed his love, why would Mehru allow Aayat to take that moment from her? What grief has Aayat experienced? Is it so difficult for Aayat to find a man who actually likes her? Instead, Mehru “sacrifices” her real relationship with Shahjahan for Aayat’s imaginary relationship with him. Mehru behaves in a way that’s simply not logical. Naeem, once again, comes to apologize to Mehru and in a sincere moment, begs for her forgiveness. It’s a difficult situation, but he has apologized before and has done what he can to keep Mehru safe from harmful situations. Yet when he apologizes a final time, Mehru curses him, saying she won’t ever forgive him. But the greatest blockade in Mehru’s life is Mehru herself. Why won’t she forgive Naeem when she is creating her own problems by allowing her sister and Kaneez to destroy her happiness?

The performances aren’t much to speak about, only because the situation has become so difficult to watch and so nonsensical. Is there any way for this show to end happily with Shahjahan and Mehru together when he is now married to Aayat? Shahjahan’s truth about his involvement in Mehru’s marriage breaking apart hasn’t been revealed yet (which could have easily been a turning point for Kaneez’s attitude towards Mehru had he actually shared that information with her), which means this show is going to be dragged out for a long period of time. Will viewers like myself still be around to watch? That’s the question. “Meherposh” is a disappointing show to say the least.
