Khalilur Rehman Qamar has faced the flak of many in the past, with his continuous and derogatory remarks about women. He has now found himself in the spotlight once again following his recent comments about feminism and the nationwide protests against rape culture in Pakistan. Not realizing that with great fame comes great responsibility, the acclaimed writer appeared on a local TV show where he weighed in on his opinion about the freedom of women in the country. His statements did not sit too well with viewers who criticised him on social media for more than one reason. “What sort of freedom do they want?” Qamar asked the show host.
He added, “They’re out on the roads already, they’re chanting these vicious slogans at Liberty Chowk. I want to question their fathers and brothers. Where are they? Where were they when these women came out on the streets, shouting and screaming? They must have come to the protest with their knowledge. Are they not free to do so? What other kinds of freedom do they yearn for?”

But that was not all! He then made another below-the-belt comment, adding, “Do these women want to get inside a room with their boyfriends as their fathers guard the door? Their brothers informing others that their sisters are busy? Is this the kind of freedom these women want?” He said, “Who appointed these 35, 40 women as representatives of the rest of the pious women of Pakistan? This is something that has not been questioned,” he said. “Under the disguise of freedom of speech, can these women abuse the culture, traditions, norms, brothers and fathers of our country? I would want the rest of the women of Pakistan to not fall prey to the agendas of these ‘vulgar’ women.” A bevy of renowned personalities including fashion designer Maheen Khan and singer Annie Khalid have lashed out at him on Twitter.
