Pakistani cinema witnesses at least one big release every year that connects with audiences and brings in whopping numbers at the box office. In 2018, it was filmmaker Nabeel Qureshi and producer Fizza Ali Meerza’s Load Wedding. The film made waves at the ticket counters, attracting footfall by and large and generating Rs13.5 crore in its long run at cinemas across the country. The film stars Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat in lead roles and centres on the subject of dowry: the transfer of parental property, gifts, or money at the marriage of a daughter. Now, the dynamic duo of Qureshi and Meerza have sent out a powerful message in light of the same.
“Dowry has always been a cause of endorsing greed and immorality in the society. From the most dominant class to the most struggling all have portrayed it as culture. Load Wedding was an effort to recognise the pain and imbalance dowry causes to women. We feel proud to be witnessing the era where it’s finally banned,” said Qureshi, while speaking to The Brown Identity about the historic ban on dowry in Pakistan.

Load Wedding is a social satire with the perfect blend of light-hearted comedy, ironic situations, and intense emotions. Fahad (Raja) lives in a small town with his parents and an unmarried sister, Baby Baji. He soon meets his ladylove Meeru (Mehwish Hayat) and is eager to marry her when the plot takes a twist following the sudden demise of his father. Now, Raja is left with the responsibility of filling in his father’s shoes while also finding a husband for his sister. Meeru seems to be the lucky charm in Raja’s life until fate again takes another turn, leaving the pair with only one day to arrange for the dowry that would save his sister’s wedding from falling apart.
