On item numbers debate, Hamza Ali Abbasi questions why strip shows aren’t aired

If there’s one Pakistani celebrity who doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, it is none other than Hamza Ali Abbasi. The actor is known for his outspokenness and has always been vocal about his opinion and his stance on a number of issues pertaining to society, politics, religion and item numbers. The prominent artist recently made headlines when he announced two new projects that he has signed up for.

 

Whatever his opinion may on certain things may be, it appears that Hamza Ali Abbasi always leaves the internet divided in its opinion. He always manages to cause an uproar but also gets the conversation going. And now, in a recent interview with a London-based publication, the Alif actor shared his views once again on item numbers as well as his upcoming projects.

 

Of item numbers he said, “It has a negative impact,” adding, “It is bad from a religious point of view, it’s bad even from a secular point of view. You don’t demean a woman onscreen and call it art.” He then compared item numbers with strip shows and said, “It’s just my opinion but why are strip shows not art? We can show that on our television from let’s say 10pm to 11pm. In my head, there’s a distinction between art…”

 

Hamza Ali Abbasi has amassed a following of over 3 million followers on Twitter and can easily be said to be one of the country’s most prominent celebrities. During the interview, he also talked about the circulating rumours that he has bought fake followers to which he laughingly said, “If I bought followers, it wouldn’t take me seven years to get 3.1 million followers. When you buy followers, that time limit is just for six months for let’s say 10 million. If I were to buy followers, I would definitely buy 10 million.”

 

Hamza Ali Abbasi is all set to star in Bilal Lashari’s magnum opus, The Legend of Maula Jatt as the antagonist, Noori Natt. The film also stars Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Humaima Malick, Gohar Rasheed, Ali Azmat and others. Any Hamza Ali Abbasi fan would know that the film has been embroiled in controversy for a long time now and has been postponed a few too many times due to shooting schedules, a legal battle and now the pandemic.

The actor however, still has high hopes for the upcoming venture. “The reason I am excited about Maula Jatt is that it has Bilal’s direction, cinematography – combined with a great story and screenplay. So that’s definitely something that I am looking forward to,” he asserted. The actor went on to add that he believes that the film will even surpass his last hit, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani as well.

 

The Pyaray Afzal actor also divulged into the infamous Ertugrul debate and spoke about his thoughts on the show and what he thinks of a foreign show taking over the local content and whether it depicts Islamic history aptly. To this he was of the opinion that, “I’m just happy something became such a hit without an item number in it.”
