Veteran Pakistani film actor Firdous Begum has passed away at the age of 75. She breathed her last at a hospital in Lahore after suffering from a stroke on Monday, which resulted in a brain hemorrhage and her condition becoming extremely critical very fast. Real name Parveen, Firdous performed the famous role of Heer in Heer Ranjha 1970. Originally from Lahore, she kicked off her showbiz journey with the 1973 film Fanoos as a supporting actor introduced by Nausad, while the main leads were played by Komal and Salman Peerzada. Following this, she starred in several projects including Khandaan, Malang, Lai Laag and Aurat.
She received her first breakthrough after a stellar performance in the super hit film Malangi in 1965. Malangi also featured Mahi Ve Sanu Bhul Na Javin, sung by Noor Jehan and picturised on Firdous. The song became a soaring hit of its time. “Firdous Begum is clearly the prettiest woman to grace the celluloid during Lollywood’s heydays. She is not only known for being a hard worker but also for her mannerism and work ethics, I hope and pray she recovers soon,” actor Shiba Butt told The Express Tribune earlier.

In her heydays, Firdous worked with leading Punjabi actors of her time including Habibur Rehman, Lala Sudhir and Yusuf Khan. Producer Masood Parvez brought Firdous and Durrani together for the folk tale of Mirza Jat in 1967 which became an instant success too. During her longstanding career, she worked in 160 films among which around 30 were in Punjabi and three in Pushto. Her most popular Punjabi works include Heer Ranjha, Dilan de Sauday, Malangi and Aansoo. She also won the Best Actress Award for her role in the film Heer Ranjha, Aansoo and Ziddi.
