Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan embarked on his maiden visit to Afghanistan earlier today. Upon his arrival in Kabul, the premier was reportedly greeted with a warm welcome at the Presidential Palace. Khan travelled to the neighbouring country following Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s invitation. The last time PM Khan and Ghani met was when the latter visited Pakistan in June 2019. The two leaders had a telephonic conversation in September 2020. A statement from the PM Office weighed in on his visit, stating, “The focus will be on further deepening the fraternal bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Afghan peace process, and regional economic development and connectivity.”

It continued, “As part of this process, and in the run-up to the prime minister’s forthcoming visit, Adviser on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood visited Kabul from 16-18 November 2020. The people of Pakistan and Afghanistan are linked through immutable bonds of history, faith, culture, kinship, values and traditions,” reads the PMO statement. “The Prime Minister’s visit will help foster a stronger and multi-faceted relationship between the two brotherly countries.” Khan’s party PTI’s official Twitter handle read, “Regional peace is always the first and foremost priority of PM IK and it’s practical example can be seen in his collaborative efforts for bringing Afghans and Americans to the table of negotiations for bringing an utmost peace and harmony in the region.” Social media users on the micro-blogging platform are now lauding Khan for his first-ever visit to Afghanistan and praying that it will bear fruit.
