Some shows begin with such promise, particularly when they arrive with a promising cast. Sanam Jung, Mekaal Zulfiqar, Muneeb Butt and Rabab Hashim star in lead roles in “Qarar,” supported by Wasim Abbas and Seemi Pasha. Written by Aliya Bukhari and directed by Barkat Siddiqui, “Qarar” is a show about two cousins who are polar opposites of one another. While Faria (Rabab Hashim) is kind, generous-hearted and forgiving to a fault, Maya (Sanam Jung) is a brat who believes she’s entitled to every good thing in life (including her sacrificing cousin’s mother’s jewelry).
Up until the finale, we’ve seen absolutely every nonsense possible occur between these two cousins. There are vamp-like characters and then there are those like Maya who get away with everything for simply one reason – Faria allows her to. It’s difficult to feel sorry for Faria, because she has known what Maya is like all along. Maya has thrown her under the bus and ruined her reputation several times. She has wronged her over and over again – and yet, Faria makes excuses for Maya and covers for her every step of the way, even when her own marriage is on the line. Why? There is being sacrificing and then there’s being absolutely empty-headed and this is the category Faria would fall into.
In the finale, Ammar (Muneeb Butt) is now struggling with health issues, struggling to relearn to walk after an accident, and has cast Faria out of his life. Can anyone blame him? Faria is the cause of all his problems by allowing Maya into their lives. Still, after speaking to Junaid, Ammar decides to forgive Faria and take her back, because she was a good wife. Meanwhile, Maya is living with Salman (Ali Safina), who claims his wife is dead – but surprise! She isn’t dead, she’s alive and well and has been living in Canada for the past 8 months. She arrives spontaneously and kicks Maya back out of the house, leaving Maya to go back to Junaid (Mekaal Zulfiqar), begging him for forgiveness. Maya’s crocodile tears don’t win over Junaid and they don’t win over the audience either. This is a woman who was living happily with Salman 30 minutes earlier and has suddenly “changed.” No, she hasn’t. Maya arrives back home in a rikshaw and spots Ammar and Faria headed back home to start their lives over while she has come back to square one. She wipes her tears away and…….the end. How much do you want to bet Faria forgives her and Maya wreaks havoc on her life once again?

It’s quite simple to sum up the madness that is “Qarar.” Salman marries Maya as his second wife, but his first wife takes offense and threatens to cut him off financially. He divorces Maya and Maya marries Junaid. Junaid is the perfect husband, but Maya wants more money, so when Salman’s wife “passes away,” Salman encourages Maya to leave Junaid and marry him again. Maya aborts her child on Salman’s instruction and then stays with him while recovering, waiting to get divorced from Junaid before the two get remarried. But wait! Salman’s first wife arrives back home, alive and well, and kicks Maya out of the house – and Salman backs her up, telling Maya that Junaid is a good man and will take her back. Does any of this make sense or seem logical? No, right? That’s because that’s precisely how this entire drama has played out – without any logic or sense, with absolutely dimwitted, brainless characters. Maya is not a strong character with a sharp mind, Faria simply allows to her to every evil thing in the book and covers for her. In reality, Faria is the true villain of this show.
Sanam Jung, Mekaal Zulfiqar, Rabab Hashim and Muneeb Butt, Ali Safina are all talented actors. But their decision to sign this show has proved to be a blemish on their careers. This is a drama one would like to erase from memory.
