While the other offerings this Ramadan appear to be comedies, “Ishq Jalebi” falls more along the lines of being a family drama with a romantic angle. Airing on Geo, “Ishq Jalebi” has been written by Saima Akram Chaudhry of “Suno Chanda” fame (who has also written the rival Ramadan show “Chupke Chupke”) and directed by Syed Wajahat Hussain, who has directed several hit Geo shows, including the current success “Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3.” Starring Wahaj Ali and Madiha Imam together for the first time, Qavi Khan, Noor Ul Hassan, Hina Bayat, Irsa Ghazal and other talented actors are also a part of the cast.
The first episode introduces viewers to Mohammad Boota (Qavi Khan), who owns a catering business that seems to focus predominantly on sweets. It had always been his dream to pass on his legacy to his two sons, Rafaqat and Sadaqat. Unfortunately, the two got married and moved away to Canada, their wives wanting to distance themselves from their father-in-law due to his “class” as a caterer. The irony that his sons work in a restaurant and a laundromat in Canada is not a fact lost on Mohammad Boota, who continues to hold a grudge against his children. He passes his business on, instead, to his only son-in-law, Ashiq Hussain (Noor Ul Hassan) and grandson Basim (Wahaj Ali). While Basim is educated in the business and has helped raise it to new heights, he dreams of something bigger and better, hoping to move abroad himself. On the other hand, his cousin Bela (Madiha Imam) is encouraging and supportive of the family business. After her own parents passed away, she has been raised by Basim’s parents and shares a particularly strong relationship with her grandfather. While Basim tries to live out his small dreams, like watching late night movies, Bela covers for him and the two share a bickering sort of friendship. However, it’s evident that Bela is in love with Basim, though he seems to be clueless to that fact.

The first episode is not particularly action-packed with a more relaxed pace, taking time to build the story. While the story has aspects of humor, it would more likely be classified as family drama and romance. The Wahaj Ali and Madiha Imam pairing is a strong point, the two not only looking great together, but also sharing a sweet chemistry – which is necessary, since the show is outwardly a romance. The cast does a great job in their roles, playing their characters convincingly. Overall, the first episode of “Ishq Jalebi” is a nice one and this is a show that may just build up into something memorable.
