American pop singer Rihanna has grabbed the spotlight – both in Pakistan and India – following her recent tweet regarding the almost two-month-long farmers’ protests happening in India. Addressing her followers on the micro-blogging platform, Rihanna wrote, “Why aren’t we talking about this?” She accompanied her post with a link to a CNN news report about India blocking internet services at the protest sites, a tactic often used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to silence farmers and threaten protestors. The artist’s tweet angered several supporters of PM Modi’s BJP party who accused her of sensationalism, with many also stating that she has been “paid by Pakistan” to do this. Others think she’s a Pakistani singer! Not one to hold back of course, Pakistanis on Twitter are responding to the situation with some great wit, humour and rib-tickling memes. Here’s what they have to say:

“This Indian politician with the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP thinks

@rihanna is a Pakistani singer. She tweeted earlier in the day in support of the protests by farmers, triggering nasty responses from BJP supporters,” penned a user. Another added, “Man I wish Rihanna was as Pakistani as BJP believes.” A similar reaction read, “Indians calling Rihanna Pakistani agent has got to be the highlight of this month.”

One user stated, “As a Pakistani man I can confirm to the Hindutva/Modi brigade on Twitter that YES in fact Rihanna IS a Pakistani spy and secret agent who is determined to take down the Modi regime. She currently lives in Lahore, Pakistan. And her favourite dish is Pakistani Biryani.” LOL! “My favorite thing on the internet right now is political party leaders thinking Rihanna is Pakistani,” quipped a Pakistani Twitter user, while another added, “Rihanna is not from Pakistan. She is from Barbados. Bhakton- for your kind information. #FarmersProtest.” But the tweet that won praise from all Pakistanis was where a user wrote, “Yes everyone, it was actually rihanna who sang Dil Dil Pakistan.”
