Sabaat Episode 13: Mawra Hocane Excels As Anaya

Mawra Hocane in Sabaat

Sabaat continues its run as the top contender with viewers.  An enjoyable show with likable characters and a refreshingly “real” feel, this show has been stealing hearts.  In Sabaat Episode 13, the show continues to follow Hassan (Ameer Gilani) and Anaya (Mawra Hocane) on their honeymoon.  The dynamics in Hassan and Anaya’s relationship are the strong point in this show and the writing has not let viewers down in this regard yet.

While on their honeymoon, Hassan and Anaya are both seen hiking, pitching a tent, cooking and sharing each experience with one another.

Their “goodness” trickles out of each scene naturally without seeming fake or artificial, as seen in the part with the two little boys.  And while the two prepare to head back home, Hassan seems perplexed at the idea.  Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gilani share adorable chemistry as usual and are doing a great job in their roles.

The Dr Haris Dilemma

Unfortunately, in Sabaat Episode 13, I found Dr. Haaris (Usman Mukhtar) and Miraal’s (Sarah Khan) track to be a little “off.”  In the previous episode review for “Sabaat,” I made a casual mention of the ethical issue with Dr. Haaris falling for a patient.

Usman Mukhtar as Dr Haris

One episode later and it’s a full-blown ethical issue as it breaks almost all boundaries of professionalism.

Miraal is visiting Dr Haaris for treatment and Dr Haaris seems to be spending more time thinking about Miraal’s beauty and how intrigued he is by her and less on how to proceed with her treatment.  Mind you, her treatment is something she severely needs as she is mentally unstable.

Read the previous episode’s review here.

Miraal has been having murderous thoughts, has committed arson and will go on to make Anaya’s life miserable – but Dr Haaris somehow thinks to dine Miraal, briefly talking about her stress and harbouring romantic feelings towards her is the best starting point.  As a viewer, I have loved Usman Mukhtar in “Anaa” (and much before this as well) and he’s great as Dr Haaris too.  One cannot fault the performance.  The issue is with the character’s behaviour, which does not sit well.

Hasan and Anaya Return Home

As Hassan and Anaya return home and prepare to join the family business, Miraal fumes and seems set to cause trouble for Anaya.  Sarah Khan’s performance in certain scenes in this episode are outstanding, particularly the one before Miraal’s therapy appointment as Miraal is seen fighting her own insecurities and feelings of being judged.

Miraal Returns to Work

Miraal returns to work after hearing Anaya has joined the office and immediately hatches a plan with her father.  He decides to hand over his shares to his children, giving Miraal 51% and Hassan 49% after his death, asking Miraal to assume her role immediately. This essentially puts Miraal in charge, leaving Hassan and Anaya at her mercy.  This is a strange game for their father to agree to at such a point, especially considering Miraal’s mental state.  If anything, it highlights how much power Miraal hoards over her own family – but at what cost?

While “Sabaat” has been enjoying a seamless run with almost entirely positive reviews, how much longer will viewers see Miraal’s family running and hiding from Miraal?

It was almost irritating to see Anaya trying to gain Miraal’s approval, especially considering their past history.  The performances continue to be solid, though the way Ameer Gilani is playing Hassan in the last couple of episodes has been a bit confusing.  It’s becoming difficult to understand what Hassan is thinking.  Whether this is an intentional thing or not, we’ll have to wait and see.
