“Sabaat” has been a beautiful, unconventional story with the focus on love relationships, but also on familial relationships. It’s rare that we see shows without the saas-bahu drama and relationships that belittle to the point of being overdramatic. “Sabaat” has given viewers a window into positive parent-daughter relationships and even a supportive mother-son relationship. This continues in the latest episode. While we’ve seen Hassan and Anaya move out, leaving Miraal and her taunts behind, Miraal is also seen moving forward in this episode.
The Miraal and Dr. Haaris love story continues in episode 17 and now that the issue of ethics has left the room, the two are seen actively meeting and forming a bond. But on what basis is this bond being formed? Miraal has been seen as aggressive not only within the walls of her household, but also with her own friends, Hassan’s friends and even in the workplace. Sure, Haaris seems to be bringing out a “softer” side to her personality, but is that a real part of Miraal or is it a facade? How long can Miraal’s true nature be hidden – or is she really changing? There’s an interesting moment when Farid, Miraal’s father, meets Haaris and puts out the idea of Haaris living with them. Haaris is polite, but makes it clear that he would never live in their home. While one would imagine Miraal would create a fuss, she smoothly brushes over it, reassuring her father that she and Haaris will visit often. Is she really changing? Dr. Haaris isn’t being given enough scope as one would like, though it’s nice to hear his back story and see how hard he has worked to become the strong, confident man he is. He is self-made in every sense of the term. But does he harbor his own insecurities because of it? Any indication of Haaris being anything but sweet, kind and considerate has not yet been seen and it’s almost a shame to “waste” such a nice man on Miraal. But it’s still confusing as to what exactly Haaris is attracted to other than Miraal’s appearance.
Unfortunately, our favorite couple Hassan (Ameer Gilani) and Anaya (Mawra Hocane) seem headed for trouble in their marital life. While blissfully in love, their current circumstances are slowly inching towards creating tension in their relationship, a sort of “Abhimaan”-like situation. While Anaya is now holding down a job, Hassan is still looking for work – and to make matters worse, a 6-month ban in the construction business has shut down all hope of Hassan finding a job. While Anaya tries to support him through his lonely, quiet days by creating fitness plans for him and encouraging him to avoid sitting idle, his insecurity begins raging when he realizes he has to ask Anaya for money for the simplest of things, like paying the landlord.

This scenario with Hassan and Anaya is difficult to watch, because they have been the perfect image of a trusting, understanding, progressive couple. Yes, the ego does tend to cause problems in any relationship and this situation is no different. Still, one hopes this couple can handle the situation well and shut down any negativity entering their lives. This storyline would push the show in the “regressive” bracket along with everything else. To add to that, the last thing viewers want to see is a “I told you so” from Miraal. As always, Ameer Gilani and Mawra Hocane carry this episode in a likeable, confident manner. There’s also a moment that must be mentioned where Hassan’s parents fight with Farid berating his wife as usual when she finally stands up and tells him she’s no longer scared of him. This is such a strong, liberating moment for this character who has suffered for her own children, but no longer feels any need to suffer any longer. The next episode will see the progression in Haaris and Miraal’s relationship while Hassan and Anaya’s relationship will suffer some emotional insecurity. We will have to wait and see how this storyline is handled.
