SRK, Kajol statues to be unveiled in London to mark 25 years of DDLJ

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol fans rejoice! A statue of both the Bollywood actors will be unveiled in London’s Leicester Square to mark 25 years of their cult-hit romantic comedy film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). The film was released in 1995 and was produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Aditya Chopra. This is quite an exciting moment for fans of this film; one which resonates with all our childhoods.

As per the announcement, the bronze statues of the leading pair are all set to be unveiled in the spring of 2021. It will be the first-ever Bollywood film statue to be put up in the United Kingdom.

According to leading Indian daily, Times of India, the statue will depict a scene which was picturised in the heart of the bustling city. The statue is planned to be an addition to the ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail that has installations of Harry Potter, Laurel and Hardy, Gene Kelly from Singin’ in the Rain and Wonder Woman.

“Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the most successful Hindi films of all time. The statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood,” Mark Williams, destination marketing director, Heart of London Business Alliance, was quoted as saying to Mid-Day. The organisers are expecting to unveil the statues in the presence of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

There probably isn’t a single desi who hasn’t seen DDLJ, which has been one of the longest-running Indian films in theatres. The film crossed 1200 weeks without an uninterrupted run at the iconic Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai in 2018. The SRK and Kajol-starrer made several records including winning 10 Filmfare Awards, the most for a single film at the time.

Whether it was the storyline of the pairing of SRK and Kajol, the film has been a hit. The actors have shared screen space in a number of projects including the likes of Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham and My Name Is Khan.

We can’t wait to see what this statue is going to look like!
