The world wakes up to the news that 34-year-old Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput is no more. Prima facie cause of death: Asphyxia due to hanging.
The Medical Report
Preliminary reports from the doctor suggest that it is suicide. The body is then sent for further examination with a detailed report to arrive in a few days. Samples of the viscera are also sent for further examination.
Family Reaction
Visuals of Sushant’s father Krishna Kumar Singh at the family home in Patna make headlines. The media personnel reach inside his house and show grieving members, friends and family visiting them. Friends and relatives interviewed claim that it cannot be suicide and one of them even presses for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Media Coverage
The media drops every other story including the COVID-19 coverage which was predominantly on the news prior to Sushant’s passing. The pandemic is now the media. Theories of depression are floated. So-called ‘experts’ debate on how there is intense pressure in the film industry and how it gets on to every everyone. Parallels are drawn to Bollywood actress Jiah Khan’s suicide case in which Sooraj Pancholi is still an accused and fighting the case in courts with the late actress’ mother Rabia Khan. Reactions are sought from everyone connected or not connected to Sushant.
Social Media
In the meantime, pictures of his dead body with the hanging marks prominent on his neck are leaked all over social media. Another video where one claims to see one of his fingers moving is also put up. Every keyboard warrior on social media comes up with their own theories about the marks on the neck and how it does not look like he died from hanging.
Trolling, Abuse and Threats
Allegations against Karan Johar and star kids Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor and Salman Khan continue. Stars are trolled, abused and unfollowed. Many go into social detoxification, from Karan to Shashank Khaitan, Zaheer Iqbal to Saquib Saleem and Sonakshi Sinha to Aayush Sharma.

Sushant’s mortal remains are consigned to the flames and the last rites are done. His family including his father and sisters turn up. Few Bollywood friends are also present though it is raining heavily. Even his first girlfriend Ankita Lokhande and his previous girlfriend Kriti Sanon come up. Rhea Chakraborty, the girlfriend who he had just broken up with is not present. Kangana Ranaut puts out a video stating that his last few films were not acknowledged by the film industry and accuses the Bollywood cabal. The trolling continues and is intensified.
June 17
Bihar-based lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha files a case against Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aditya Chopra, Bhushan Kumar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Ekta Kapoor, Dinesh Vijan, Karan Johar and others claiming that they have abetted Sushant’s suicide. Social media goes into a tizzy and starts celebrating.
June 18
Sushant’s ashes are immersed in the holy Ganga river by the family. The anger in the social media further intensifies into angst and assumes violent proportions.
June 19
As allegations mount from various corners of the film fraternity through media as well as social media, Maharashtra state’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh says that professional rivalries will also be probed.
June 24
The final post mortem report arrives stating, “no foul play and a clear case of suicide.” The cause continues to be asphyxia due to hanging. Social media reiterates its demand for a CBI probe
June 28
Bollywood actor Nana Patekar who is in Patna visits Sushant’s house in Patna to offer condolences and advice to the grieving family.
June 29
The family also announces the Sushant Singh Rajput Foundation (SSRF) to promote talented actor and person like Sushant in the fields of acting, science and sports. Actor Shekhar Suman and producer Sandip Singh visit Sushant’s home and ask for a CBI inquiry into the case.
July 14
Fans and friends light a candle a month after Sushant’s death.
July 24
Sushant’s swansong Dil Bechara is screened on an OTT platform. Fans go berserk and emotional. Imdb rating touches 10/10. Disney+ Hotstar sees a 95 million viewership on day one for the film. So even if an average price of INR100 was applied, the collections would have been INR950 crores on the first day.
July 26
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally acknowledges a letter by former Cabinet Minister Subramanian Swamy, requesting a CBI enquiry in the case. The First Information Report (FIR) is lodged against Rhea at Patna. Two days after the release of Dil Bechara on an OTT platform on Sunday, July 26, Krishna Kumar Singh files the complaint at the Rajiv Nagar Police Station, Bihar. Sushant’s father opts for Patna instead of Mumbai to avoid travel around 3000 kilometers to and from to fight the case. The six-page FIR has many serious allegations and names many including Rhea, her brother Showik and her parents Indrajit and Sandhya, as well as Sushant’s manager Shruti Modi (after Disha Salian) and Rhea’s friend Samuel Miranda. The primary allegation is that Rhea had abetted his suicide. The details are out only on Wednesday after the Patna police reach Mumbai and ask their counterparts to assist in their investigation.
Sushant’s sister reveals Ankita Lokhande told her he was unhappy with Rhea. According to Ankita, Sushant had told her that he is “quite unhappy in the relationship and wants to end it as Rhea harassed him”. Ankita posted on Twitter saying, “Truth Wins.”
The Sections
The case has been filed under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 380 (theft in dwelling house), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 306 (abetment of suicide) and 120-b (punishment for criminal conspiracy).
Allegations made in the First Information Report (FIR)
The FIR alleges that
- Rhea Chakraborty embezzled the money from Sushant forcing him to take the drastic step.
- Rhea got Sushant to change his phone number to isolate him from his family and didn’t let them close to him.
- Rhea made Sushant feel depressed and forced him to take the wrong medicines for mental illness, administered him overdoses of medicines and told the media that he had dengue.
- Rhea had threatened Sushant and his sister that she would tell the media that he was mentally unstable.
- Rhea used up Sushant’s debit and credit cards and also siphoned off Rs 15 crore from Sushant’s account.
- When Rhea realised that Sushant’s money was running out, she left Sushant home with her belongings.
- Sushant told his father over phone that Rhea and her family would never leave him but drive him mad.
- Sushant feared that he would be taken to an asylum.

- Forensic analysis of the cloth used for hanging that it could “take his weight” also suggest no foul play and ligature marks on the neck do not point at homicide.
- After the details of the police case are out, Rhea immediately moves the higher courts asking for the case to be transferred to Mumbai with the help of high-profile lawyer Satish Maneshinde.
- The Mumbai police confirms that around Rs 15 lakh were made as withdrawals from Sushant Singh Rajput’s bank accounts since July last year after having probed it for a few days.

The Mumbai police which began its investigation the very day the suicide took place have thus far questioned – his sister, his father, his friends, filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aditya Chopra, Mahesh Bhatt, Rumi Jaffery, Shekhar Kapur (over email), Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions’ CEO Apoorva Mehta, co star from Dil Bechara – Sanjana Sanghi, casting director turned Dil Bechara director Mukesh Chhabra, casting director Shanoo Sharma from Yash Raj Films, Salman Khan’s former manager Reshma Shetty, film critic and journalist Rajeev Masand, Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant’s business manager Shruti Modi, PR manager Ankita Tehlani, two psychologists, one psychotherapist among others.
The police also ask for documents from Yash Raj Films regarding how the contracts were made with Sushant after filmmaker Shekhar Kapur talks on social media about how Sushant was heartbroken when his film Paani starring Sushant was shelved. Bhansali, Aditya Chopra and Shanoo Sharma too were questioned for the same angle.
Police also probe the angle about Sushant’s planned film with director Rumi Jaafery also starring Rhea Chakraborty.
Mumbai police are exploring every possible angle right from nepotism and favouritism to all of Sushant Singh Rajput’s papers and contracts, write ups against him allegedly planted by the Bollywood cabal in the media, film reviews and ‘blind items’ about Sushant Singh painting him as a ‘skirt chaser’ among other things, his alleged ‘mental illness’ among others.
Theories
There were many theories discussed for the death. While we will NOT reproduce any of those theories and let the law take its course, every person putting up a theory not only explained it scientifically but also seemed to have known everything on the subject.
Fakes
Fake ‘deleted’ posts of Sushant Singh Rajput also came to the fore where it was being said that he was on the verge of suicide. An Alt News verification after this journalist posted a query showed that it was false.
What Now?
One awaits the court order on whether the case will be with the Mumbai or Patna police.
Point to ponder for all trolls
After their tirade against nepotism and how it ‘caused’ Sushant’s suicide, where will they direct it now? One needs to remember that taking the police in all directions will not help!
