Taylor Swift is not new to breaking records from time to time. The ace singer has been trending on number one of Billboard 200 for eight weeks at a stretch, for her much-loved album Folklore. The compilation is also in the news for being the first album to sell a million copies in the United States in 2020. Interestingly, just two weeks ago, the Bad Blood crooner’s surprise release had fallen outside the top 10 and was nowhere close to securing the first spot. However, things turned around for the powerhouse following a drastic increase in sales after she offered signed copies of Folklore on her website.
Swift wrote and recorded the album during the lockdown, unveiling the quarantine release on July 24.
In September, Swift successfully broke the record previously held by Whitney Houston and became the woman with most cumulative weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The success of Folklore has also led to Swift being nominated in leading categories at the upcoming People’s Choice Awards 2020, including Female Artist of 2020, Album of 2020 for Folklore, and Soundtrack Song of 2020 for Only the Young on Miss Americana.
Folklore is the ninth album in Swift’s career to sell at least one million copies. In addition to Folklore and Lover, the albums are her 2006 self-titled release, 2007’s The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, 2008’s Fearless, 2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s Red, 2014’s 1989, and 2017’s Reputation. A week ago, Swift started once again selling signed CDs of Folklore at $25 a pop on her online store, something which has made her the centre of attraction once again. “Along with the signed cd, some lucky purchasers of these items may even receive complimentary cat hair stuck inside the pages,” Swift tweeted earlier along with a photo of CD booklets and one of her cats.” Well, she knows how to keep her fans swooning over her and we love it!
