Back in 2018, Zee5 was launched in India, a streaming platform for films and original content. A number of Pakistani directors and writers were brought on board to produce original Pakistani content for their platform. Along with “Churails,” Qatil Haseenaon Ke Naam,” “Dhoop Ki Deewar,” “Ek Jhooti Love Story,” and “Mr And Mrs Shamim,” “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” was also one of the announced shows (and don’t forget the long-awaited “Barzakh.”) Unfortunately, with the state of India and Pakistan’s relations, many already completed shows sat in no-mans-land, unable to see a release on any platform on either side of the border. However, with India’s ban on Pakistani artists lifted, Zee5 and Green Entertainment seemingly working together and a sudden resurgence in popularity of Pakistani dramas in India (such as Ishq Murshid, Jaan E Jahan, Mein and Tere Bin), “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” is finally releasing on February 26, 2024
The promos of “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” are visually stunning, nothing short of what one would expect from Anjum Shahzad, a master of stunning cinematography. The story has been written by Shahid Dogar, the writer behind the currently running “Akhara.” The story of “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” follows two best friends, Fakhar (Bilal Abbas Khan) and Kashif (Raza Talish), two best friends who, unexpectedly, fall in love with the same girl – Gulbano. However, Gulbano is in love with a poet, who goes by the name “Devdas.” When Kashif reveals himself as Devdas, the story sets out on a path of love, betrayal, friendship and sacrifice. This is a romance which focuses on human nature and how the innocence of love can also transform into deception.
Bilal Abbas Khan is currently running on a career high with the success of “Ishq Murshid” and his performance in “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” looks equally strong – and equally lovable. Sarah Khan is perfect casting as Gulbano, a beautiful woman who attracts attention….and seems to have four men vying for her attention in this narrative. Raza Talish is a performer who has gradually been proving himself and, hopefully, “Abdullahpur Ka Devdas” will give him scope to perform to prove his talent. Nauman Ejaz also seems to feature in the show, though it’s not clear how large his role is. The show is expected to air on the Zindagi channel in India starting February 26. It’s not yet clear how those of us outside the subcontinent and within Pakistan will be able to watch the show – but we will have our eyes and ears open! This one appears to be a must-watch.
