The Queen’s Gambit: Some Pakistani Viewers Are Loving It, Others Feel Its Overrated

Covid-19 has pushed people to stay inside their homes. One of the best distractions we all have is of course binge-watching Netflix. The latest show to be loved by all is the American drama television miniseries, The Queen’s Gambit. Set in the Cold War era and based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel of the same name, it explores the story of an orphaned chess genius Beth Harmon, who struggles with addiction in pursuit of becoming the greatest chess player in the world. From Anna Taylor-Joy’s different fashion statements and stellar acting to the show’s powerful storyline, Pakistani Twitter users cannot stop gushing over the show, which has been trending on social media platforms since it first released. “The Queen’s Gambit – so unique so different that it’s difficult to put into words. Highly recommended!” wrote one user on the micro-blogging site. Another added, “Just finished The Queen’s Gambit. And I’m completely in love with how beautiful this show is. From story-telling to character development, from production design to the intense music This one maintained the true essence of what the show stood for i.e. Chess. All that in 7 episodes.” Some female users cannot stop fan-girling over Beth’s character. A post read, “Anybody who has seen The Queen’s Gambit, please get in touch. I want to discuss and fangirl over it.” Singing praises for the show, a user penned, “Need more seasons like The Queen’s Gambit.” Jemima Goldsmith summed up the show in a few words. “The Queen’s Gambit is perfect,” she tweeted.

A user wrote, “You all keep giving fake reviews about Netflix shows. The Queen’s Gambit was mediocre at best, intense but too slow. A Suitable Boy was awful. So many irrelevant, inconclusive plot lines and a constant glorification of colonisation. Upgrade your taste.” Another disappointed Netflix-watcher noted, “Not enjoying The Queen’s Gambit thus far. It has a 100% rating on rotten tomatoes, hmm.” Responding to the post, a user retorted, “Suitable Boy I agree and I didn’t even try watching. The Queen’s Gambit was a great story. What’s the issue with that?” Disagreeing with the show being called ‘mediocre’ by Twitter critics, a user commented, “I don’t agree that Queen’s Gambit was ‘mediocre’. The show in itself is good but I found the pacing slow. In the first half at least. Loved the last episode though.”
