Tinkay Ka Sahara Episode 1: Sami Khan and Haroon Shahid Reel The Audience In

“Tinkay Ka Sahara” is the latest show to begin on Hum TV, replacing “Aitebaar.”  This drama is immediately appealing due to its cast, which includes Sami Khan, Rubab Hashim, Sonya Hussyn and Haroon Shahid in lead roles.  The story has been written by Zanjabeel Asim and directed by Zeeshan Ahmed.  The story revolves around the idea that money is everything and is the one thing that will allow an individual to lead a complete and fulfilled life.  But is money everything or can we lose ourselves and our self-respect in our efforts to acquire those finances?

We are introduced to Duaa (Rubab Hashim), a young girl who wants better for her future than her middle class lifestyle.  In her dreams of money, she is overjoyed when she receives a proposal from an incredibly well-off family.  There are red flags right from the beginning with her parents warning Duaa of the guy’s nature.  He is known to be incredibly moody and can get angry at a moments notice.  Duaa brushes away these complaints and her parents react pretty much the way we, as an audience, are reacting, worried if Duaa is getting herself into a bad situation just for money.  Shortly after, we are introduced to Wasay (Sami Khan), the prospective groom, who shoots a man’s buffalo in anger – though the way the scene is set up, we are made to believe he shot the man himself!  It’s a tense moment until the confusion is cleared when he confesses to his brother-in-law (Adnan Jaffer), but the feeling of relief felt by his brother in law is felt by us as well, which only proves that the moment has been set up nicely.  Wasay is an angry man, but he hasn’t reached the point of wanting to kill a human being…..but how much will it take for him to get there?

Meanwhile, Qadr (Sonya Hussyn) is living with her sister’s in-laws after her parents passing and feels like a burden.  She misses her own home and her own life, dreaming of escaping her sister’s home.  It’s then that a proposal comes from Haroon Shahid’s character.  Haroon Shahid’s character (couldn’t catch his name) is downright hilarious.  He is a lazy young man with no ambition other than trapping a rich woman – but unfortunately, that isn’t working out for him.  His scene with Saba Faisal griping over his cheap phone is laugh-out-loud funny.  Seeing Qadr’s picture, he agrees to marry her and is very happy not only after meeting her, but also on their engagement.  It’s sweet to see how he reassures her when the elders are taunting one another over the lack of dowry (or gifting a ring).  But for how long will he remain this loving when he himself is greedy?

The engagements between both couples showcase different attitudes.  While Haroon Shahid’s character and Qadr are happy with their relationship, Duaa and Wasay are visibly uncomfortable with one another, particularly after Wasay behaves badly throughout the engagement.  Both upcoming marriages haven’t gotten off to the best start, but it remains to be seen how the stories play out.  More than anything, it’s interesting that Haroon Shahid is not on the main introduction image.  Will his character be making an exit?

Haroon Shahid and Sami Khan’s performances really stand out in this episode.  While Sami Khan’s angry performance isn’t something we haven’t seen before, it’s an interesting character that he plays very well and his pairing with Rubab Hashim is appealing.  Haroon Shahid is very funny and puts a smile on the viewer’s face with his silly antics, particularly his obsession with his phone during the engagement.  This is a character who will be entertaining to watch, even if he does develop a negative side.  Both Sonya Hussyn and Rubab Hashim do a great job in their roles as well and it’s clear both ladies will get a chance to really perform in these roles.  Overall, the first episode of “Tinkay Ka Sahara” is worthwhile and immediately gripping.
