UAE: Here Is When It Plans To Land Spacecraft On The Moon

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has kicked off a new project with plans to land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon in 2024. The news was announced by Emirati Prime Minister and Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Tuesday. The aircraft will be completely manufactured by Emirati engineers in the UAE, mentioned Sheikh Mohommad on the micro-blogging site Twitter. “The lunar rover will send back images and data from new sites of the moon that haven’t been explored by previous lunar missions,” he added. The Emirates News Agency said the lunar rover will be called “Rashid,” named after one of the founders of the UAE.

According to the prime minister, “the gathered data will be shared globally with research centers and institutions”, reported Gulf News. If successful in 2024, the UAE would become the fourth nation on earth to land a spacecraft on the moon, after the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. “The rover will be 100% manufactured and developed in the UAE by Emirati Engineers. The UAE will be the fourth country in the world to send a mission to explore the moon. We will continue our contribution to the global pursuit of knowledge for the benefit of humanity,” he stated.

Sheikh Mohommad’s announcement came after the UAE launched a Mars probe earlier this year. In July, the UAE’s Amal (Hope) probe was launched from Japan, marking the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission. Amal is set to reach Mars in February 2021, the year the oil-rich Gulf state celebrates 50 years of its formation. In September that year, Amal will start transmitting Martian atmospheric data, which will be made available to the international scientific community, officials said. Last year, the UAE sent its first astronaut to the International Space Station. The country has also set a goal to build a human colony on Mars by 2117.
