With no justice in sight, Sanam Saeed demands update on motorway gang rape

It’s been a sad state of affairs in Pakistan the past few weeks with the torrential rains, the number of harassment cases, the abduction and rape of a five-year-old girl and most recently the rape of a woman in front of her children on the Lahore motorway. The news enraged citizens and country-wide protests broke out following the horrific gang rape. Authorities have been targeted for not taking swift action, protests in a number of cities have taken place and social media has been abuzz with slogans and placards calling for an immediate to an end in rape culture which is so rampant in our society.

Celebrities, socialites and anyone who owns a social media account raised their voices, but as the dust settles, has everyone gone back to their day to day routines? What then becomes of these rape victims and survivors? Since the gang rape earlier this month, police have arrested 15 people in connection with the incident, having identified two suspects. The public hanging of the guilty perpetrators is the popular demand we’ve been hearing the past few weeks.

Among the most recent celebrities to voice her support for the woman and the many women and children that are violated on a daily basis is actor Sanam Saeed. Just like other celebrities, Sanam Saeed too had called out the CCPO involved with the investigation of the case for victim-blaming. And now, the actor has once again spoken out and inquired about the case and demanded answers.

“Update on the rapist still on the loose?” she tweeted. “What action has been taken for the three other rape cases reported after this one? When will a course of action be finalised, what steps are being taken to assure us of our safety and protection?” she questioned.

Earlier, Sanam Saeed had taken to Twitter and retweeted a post in which Junaid Hafeez, a full bright scholar was given a death sentence and kept in solitary confinement over charges of blasphemy while Abid Ali, the suspect in the motorway incident roams freely despite having been charged with rape previously as well.

“Why? Why does the system fail us? Why do rapists roam freely?” questioned Saeed.

Following this, she had also questioned the priorities of the state amid the uproar. “Yes! Where are our priorities? Why is it not crystal clear which issues are top priority?”
