“Yun Tu Hai Pyar Bohat” is a show that falls into the category of “entertaining.” It’s not particularly clear if this is a show with a quality message or if it’s just meant to be taken as pure entertainment. Still, in its first four episodes, the show has managed to depict the male and female leads in a way that both are understandable and their reasoning for falling apart is making sense. Starring Affan Waheed and Hira Mani in lead roles, the show also stars Maryam Mirza, Javed Sheikh, Nadia Hussain, Hina Shahid, Komal Rizvi, Sabeena Syed and others, the story has been written by Aliya Bukhari and directed by Kashif Saleem.
Episode 5 is a mixed bag in terms of quality. This is where some unnecessary misunderstandings pop up that don’t really sit well with the viewer and feel terribly “Star Plus,” which is unfortunate considering the writing regarding the lead characters has been really good until now. Zain (Affan Waheed) has fallen ill after being rejected by Aima (Hira Mani). His friends, who are very loyal and lovable characters, not only care for him, but also contact Aima to visit Zain. This backfires as Sonia (Sabeena Syed) is visiting and, in Zain’s absence, verbally thrashes Aima, stating that her presence in Zain’s life is of utmost importance. While it’s not hard to understand why Aima would be upset, it’s the confrontation that occurs later in the grocery store that is an absolute mess. In reality, any woman who has been betrayed is more than happy to spill the details of why they are upset and make it clear that infidelity is unacceptable – but here, Aima continues to talk in riddles, stating Zain isn’t worthy of her and all the while, Zain keeps trying to pry the reason out for her anger. Aima is slowly growing into a very unlikble character and it’s much easier to sympathize with Zain. While Aima’s reason for not marrying Zain may be valid, her behavior isn’t. AIma’s belief that Zain isn’t hard-working may be incorrect, but he is irresponsible – which we saw today as he almost got fired from the school, only to be saved by Sonia.
Sonia is equally as crazy as Aima, introducing Zain to her parents by force and declaring that they are going into business together when she barely even knows Zain. It’s no wonder her mother, Ruhi (Nadia Hussain) throws a tantrum and insults Zain, which causes Zain to break off his friendship with Sonia. This is a relief, another instance where Zain has been well-written. Zain has never led Sonia on and now that he realizes what her intentions are, he cuts her out of his life as well. It’s nice to see that Zain doesn’t jump into a rebound relationship right away. Zain takes this moment to reevaluate his life and decides to move to Karachi. With the help of an acquaintance, he makes the move without so much as informing anyone but his friends. Will this move lead to Zain’s future success?
There’s also an over-the-top story with Nazia wanting to be a model (after putting makeup on a few times) and hanging out with a friend who is a “bad influence.” One just has to pause here and say that this is a regressive attitude, because the only thing “wrong” with Shiza and her mother is that they encourage Nazia to be independent…..and buy/wear expensive makeup. This is actually a good thing and there isn’t anything wrong with this. Aima’s reaction is ridiculous overall, though it is easy to see where she is coming from – she believes Nazia should get an education to be stable. This ideology isn’t wrong, but the attitude towards Shiza and her mother is.

Overall, the story is moving at a quick pace and is interesting enough. Initially one felt that Affan Waheed was a total miscast for this show and that can still be felt in the actual music-related scenes, but Affan is excelling in the emotional scenes and it’s no wonder he has been cast in this role. He has brought Zain to life. This is an enjoyable show to watch and if it can manage to keep the pace and continue to build on character psyche in an intelligent way, then this is a drama with much potential.
