PM Imran Khan Approves Chemical Castration Of Rapists: Twitter Users Weigh In

2020 has witnessed a number of assault cases being reported in Pakistan. Following this, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday approved, in principle, a law for the chemical castration of rapists. The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting wherein the law ministry presented a draft of the anti-rape ordinance. The draft includes increasing women’s role in policing, fast-tracking rape cases and witness protection, reported Geo News. Speaking about the grave matter, the premier said, “We need to ensure a safe environment for our citizens.” He added the legislation will be clear and transparent with strict enforcement.

 

Moreover, Khan assured rape survivors will be able to register their complaints without any fear or backlash, adding that the government will protect their identity and keep it hidden. Sources said some federal ministers also recommended public hanging for the rape convicts. But Khan believes castration will be a start for men to not participate in such horrendous crimes in the future. The prime minister’s announcement has resulted in Twitter being flooded with reactions of approval and happiness, with social media users lauding the cabinet’s decision and sharing their two cents on the latest development.

Hopefully, it will be implemented soon,” tweeted PTI member Dr. Seema Zia. “I support the intention but chemical castration means a placebo will be injected and the judge will be given a ‘job done’ signal while the real thing is kept by the police for settling political scores,” added another user. “Honestly, even chemical castration combined with jail time is not enough,” read a post.

Singing praises for PM Khan, a user noted, “PM #ImranKhan approves chemical castration law for rapists in Pakistan. All rapists and child molesters will now be chemically castrated in addition to being sent to jail for their sentence. Great work done by @ImranKhanPTI& administration.” Another user stated, “In more than 70 years of inception of this country we have evolved as a Reactionist Society only. It’s a failure of the state that it didn’t provide safe environment to its women & children. Now PM @ImranKhanPTI has called for chemical castration for convicted rapists.” Some questioned the decision. A post read, “Chemical castration of rapists is not enough in Islamic Republic of Pakistan things should be very much clear in this regard. They should be hanged publicly. #ImranKhan Pakistan #PTIGovernment Islam.” A similar tweet stated, “PM Imran Khan approves chemical castration law for rapists in #Pakistan What do you think, is this an effective solution to sexual violence?” followed by, “Doesn’t it mean that all pedophiles and rapists will need to be tracked and given chemical castration every 6 months or so? Do we have resources for that? Death penalty would have been better and more effective I think.” Most social media users were of the opinion that PM Khan’s decision is indeed a step in the right direction, to make Pakistan a safe place for women and children.
